Google Authenticator uses a two-step verification to secure your account. The two-step verification makes it hard for hackers and other unwanted guests have access to your stuff. By implementing the Google Authenticator, you're on your way to being secured. When you want to log in to your account, the Google Authenticator provides a one-time password which you'll have to provide whenever you want to access Google services. Apart from Google based sites, the Google Authenticator can also be used on other sites when you've set it up.

How the Google Authenticator 2-step verification Works

The Google Authenticator app adds an extra layer of security to your account by using the 2-step verification system. The normal way of protection that most people including myself have adopted over the years is the one-step security system which is just your password. Due to the increasing rate of cyber theft, several online firms have incorporated the two-step verification sytem into their workplace. This will reduce the rate of the cyber crime greatly because the does not have your device. A typical scenario happens when a hacker tries to access your account from an unknown location that is not in your sign in history, Google asks for the OTP( One time password) and the hacker couldn't provide it because he/she does not have your mobile phone. Now your account is secured all thanks to the 2-step verification that requires the hacker to input the OTP sent to your mobile number. I hope you now understand why you need the Google Authenticator app? It wades off hackers and cyber criminals from your account.
